Suburban steel manufacturer plans to shutter its Libertyville, Ill., plant and modernize its Chicago operations, bringing 350 manufacturing jobs with it.

CHICAGO (AP) -- A suburban steel manufacturer plans to shutter its Libertyville plant and modernize its Chicago operations, bringing 350 manufacturing jobs with it.

Tempel Steel won $7 million in city and state subsidies to keep its operations in Illinois. Company executives considered relocating to Mexico.

The renovated plant on Chicago's North Side will see its work force increase to 800 from 450 employees. The 65-year-old company manufactures steel used in electric motors and transformers.

Founded in Chicago in 1945, Tempel Steel has 2,000 employees and operations in Canada, China, India and Mexico.
