Report: Tower Automotive Laying Off Half Its Employees

Supplier of auto parts for Nissan plants in Canton and Smyrna, Tennessee, is laying off 73 of its 144 employees in Meridian, Miss.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) -- Tower Automotive, which supplies parts to Nissan plants in Canton and Smyrna, Tennessee, is laying off 73 of its 144 employees in Meridian.

Lauderdale County Supervisor Ray Boswell said he received an official notice of lay off from the company this week. Boswell says the notice says the laid off workers will remain on call back status for 12 months.

Joe Kirik, a spokesman for Novi, Michigan-based Tower, declined comment on the layoffs.

The Meridian plant opened in June 2007.

East Mississippi Business Development Corp. President Wade Jones says the impact is short term. He says he believes the economy will revive in the long run, causing an increase in auto sales and thus an increase in production by Tower.
