CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) -- Three months after Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke at the Thorngate Ltd. facility in southeast Missouri, the plant is cutting back its work week for the more than 300 employees who work there.
Thorngate announced its decision Monday, citing declining sales and a lackluster economy. The Cape Girardeau plant manufactures high-end men's clothing. The company is based in Chicago.
Plans call for cutting the work week to three days, but the company says employees will retain health insurance and other benefits.
Obama spoke to more than 200 people inside the plant on May 13th. As part of his speech he said the "economic pie has grown, but the average family is getting a smaller and smaller slice."
