Monaco Coach Decides To Keep Indiana Plant

Recreational vehicle maker reversed its decision to close its chassis-building operation in Elkhart.

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) -- Recreational vehicle maker Monaco Coach Corp. has decided to keep its chassis-building operation open in Elkhart.

The company had announced last month it was closing three factories in northern Indiana's Elkhart County, eliminating 1,400 jobs, or about a third of its work force.

But Monaco announced Monday that its joint venture with Navistar International Corp. will continue production at the Elkhart plant.

Craig Wanichek, a spokesman for Coburg, Ore.-based Monaco, says about 50 employees now employed at the plant will continue working there and the company expects that number to grow to more than 100 by 2009.

Monaco also announced it will hold job fairs this week in Wakarusa and Elkhart for workers being laid off, and companies seeking new employees are expected to attend.
