CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Volkswagen officials say a longtime manager in Germany will head the automaker's new assembly plant in Chattanooga.
Forty-six-year-old Frank Fischer is manager of VW's components plant in Brunswick, Germany, where the company opened its first plant 70 years ago.
The German-born engineer has been with Volkswagen since 1991.
Fischer has engineering degrees from RWTH Aachen and the University of Washington in Seattle.
An e-mail statement from Volkswagen Group of America on Tuesday said Fischer will start the job in Chattanooga Oct. 1.
VW plans to begin making a new sedan at the planned $1 billion plant in late 2010 or early 2011.
