Alberto-Culver’s New Plant Up To Full Production

Beauty-care products maker up to three shifts running five days a week, company said at a ceremony that served as the official opening of its Jonesboro, Ark., plant.

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) -- The Jonesboro plant of beauty-care products maker Alberto-Culver Co. is up to three shifts running five days a week, company officials said Tuesday at a ceremony that served as the official opening of the plant.

Work began on the $60 million facility in January 2007 and initial production began a year later. The 475,000-square-foot facility has 200 full-time workers, with part-time workers stepping in at busy times. The company said it plans to eventually employ 400 at the Jonesboro site.

A second phase of construction is in the preparation stages, with completion expected in mid 2009.

The plant makes products for domestic and international markets, turning out about 140 million units per year. With increased production, the plant will be able to produce 250 million units per year, the company said.

The company produces TRESemme, Alberto VO5, Nexxus and St. Ives, and, in products for the multicultural hair care market, Motions and Soft & Beautiful.

The plan for the second phase of the plant is to produce pumped products, the company said.

Melrose, Ill.-based Alberto-Culver employs 3,800 people overall and had 2007 revenue of $1.54 billion.
