Retired Army General New President Of AM General

Retired Gen. Paul Kern will replace James Armour as president effective Aug. 1.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- A retired Army general will take over as president and chief operating officer of AM General, the South Bend-based company that produces the Humvee for the military and its civilian version, the Hummer H2.

The company announced Wednesday that retired Gen. Paul Kern will replace James Armour as president effective Aug. 1. Armour will remain as the company's president and chief executive officer.

Kern will take over from Armour as CEO by the end of 2009. Armour will continue with the company as chairman through 2011.

Kern served in Vietnam and in first Gulf War and was commanding general of the Army Material Command.

AM General manufactures the Hummer for General Motors Corp., but GM officials have said they might sell the brand because of slumping sales of the sport utility vehicle.
