Lockheed Martin Buys Aculight

Privately-held maker of laser-based systems for defense and aerospace companies, bought by Lockheed to strengthen its offerings in guided munitions, airborne self-protection and advanced sensors.

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) -- Lockheed Martin Corp. said Monday it will buy Aculight Corp., a privately held maker of laser-based systems for defense and aerospace companies, to strengthen its offerings in guided munitions, airborne self-protection and advanced sensors.

Lockheed didn't disclose terms of its acquisition of the Bothell, Wash.-based company.

Aculight was founded in 1993 and has about 90 employees, Lockheed said.

The sale is subject to approval by Aculight shareholders and other closing conditions. The companies expect it will close in the third quarter.

Shares of Lockheed fell 45 cents, to $104.17 in midday trading.
