Auto Parts Maker Cuts 245 Jobs In Texas, Mexico

Windshield wiper manufacturer on the Texas-Mexico border is laying off workers for the second time in 10 months.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- A windshield wiper manufacturer on the Texas-Mexico border is laying off workers for the second time in 10 months.

Over the last several days, Trico has laid off 45 of its employees in Brownsville and about 200 in Matamoros, Mexico. That brings to more than 500 the number of workers the company has let go since October of last year.

The Brownsville Herald reports the manufacturer blames high gas prices and production cuts by U.S. automakers such as Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. The newspaper says Trico's customers include Ford, GM and Chrysler LLC.

In October, Trico cut 39 jobs in Brownsville and between 230 and 250 jobs in Matamoros.

After the latest layoffs, the company now employs about 555 workers in Brownsville and 2,300 in Matamoros.
