ST. LOUIS (AP) -- One in seven beers brewed by Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. is expected to be brewed using renewable fuel by the end of 2009, the nation's largest brewer said Wednesday.
The St. Louis-based maker of Budweiser and Michelob beers said its breweries in Houston and Fairfield, Calif. are installing technology using alternative energy that will be running by the year's end.
That means its U.S. breweries will run on more than 15 percent renewable fuel. Anheuser-Busch said it expected that more than five billion 12-oz. servings of beer will be brewed using renewable fuel by the end of next year.
The brewery in Houston will use biogas from a nearby landfill. It already uses a technology that turns brewing waste water into fuel, called BERS or bio-energy recovery system.
The company's brewery in California will also use BERS and electricity from solar panels.
Once those projects are running, 10 of Anheuser-Busch's 12 U.S. breweries will produce renewable fuel.
The company said plans are also underway to build a BERS system at an 11th brewery, in Williamsburg, Va. in 2009.
