France To Use Public Funds For Efficient Cars

Nation received EU backing to dedicate $94.3 million in public funding to companies developing parts for more energy-efficient cars.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- France has won EU backing to dedicate $94.3 million in public funding to companies developing parts for more energy-efficient cars.

Eight companies are running a $326.18 million research program to develop components for more efficient engines that would cut fuel usage by 30 percent when vehicles brake and stop.

The European Commission says the market has failed to fairly compensate investors in an area with no guarantee of success.

The program aims to develop electromagnetic engine valve controls to replace the mechanical camshaft currently used in engines and mild hybrid systems that would recover energy generated during braking and use that power again during startup.
