Ford Scraps Layoff Plans At Kentucky Plant

Automaker says the company will reduce production at its Louisville Assembly Plant but has scrapped a plan to lay off 570 auto workers next month.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A Ford Motor Co. spokeswoman says the company will reduce production at its Louisville Assembly Plant but has scrapped a plan to lay off 570 auto workers next month.

Spokeswoman Angie Kozleski says the move will keep workers actively involved in the plant. She tells The Courier-Journal the company will be able to respond more quickly as market demands change.

Production of the Explorer sport utility vehicle at the plant will be cut back from two shifts to one, but the company will keep the approximately 2,000 workers through rolling weekly layoffs.

Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford said earlier it would cut the second shift at the plant. The plant's work force last month approved a local union operating agreement.
