Esmark, USW Head To Arbitration Over Sale

Grievances have been filed by both Esmark and the union over the proposed sale to India's Essar Steel Holdings.

WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) -- The United Steelworkers is heading into arbitration Wednesday with Esmark Inc. to try to resolve a dispute over the sale of the company.

A decision is expected by Saturday.

Grievances have been filed by both Esmark and the union over the proposed sale to India's Essar Steel Holdings.

The union claims Esmark agreed to a buyout without giving it time to put together a competing bid.

The USW has joined forces with Russia's OAO Severstal, which is also now competing for the company.

Esmark, meanwhile, filed a grievance against the union, accusing it of improperly interfering with a business transaction that should be left to shareholders and the board of directors.

Esmark says Essar made the best offer.
