Canadian Plastic Packaging Plant To Close

Ball Corp., which makes metal and plastic packaging, said Thursday it will close its plastic packaging manufacturing plant in Brampton, Ontario.

BROOMFIELD, Colo. (AP) -- Ball Corp., which makes metal and plastic packaging, said Thursday it will close its plastic packaging manufacturing plant in Brampton, Ontario.

Ball said the plant's 90 employees will receive severance and outplacement services.

The company said the operations will be consolidated into the company's other plastic packaging manufacturing facilities in North America.

The closure is expected to occur by the end of the third quarter.

The company said closing the plant will result in a charge of about $5 million. About $2 million of that sum will be recorded in the second quarter. The remaining costs will be recorded in the second half of the year, the company said.

Ball, which employs more than 15,500 people worldwide, said the closure will create savings of about $4 million starting in 2009.

The plant makes polypropylene bottles for food.
