Westport Corporation will invest $3 million to open a 203,000-square-foot assembly plant in Roanoke, creating 60 jobs.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- An automotive components company is planning to open an assembly plant in Roanoke, creating 60 jobs.

Governor Tim Kaine says the Westport Corporation will invest $3 million to open the 203,000-square-foot plant.

Workers will assemble axles for the Volvo Heavy Truck plant in Dublin.

Louisville, Kentucky-based Westport will occupy the building formerly used by containerboard and corrugated packaging maker Smurfit-Stone.

Kaine says Virginia successfully competed with West Virginia for the project.
