Steel Plant To Use Temps During Strike

Officials with Latrobe Specialty Steel say they'll use temporary workers to continue production while 350 union steelworkers are on strike.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) -- Officials with Latrobe Specialty Steel Co. say they'll use temporary workers to continue production while 350 union steelworkers are on strike.

United Steelworkers Local 1537 says its members went on strike Thursday because they're unhappy with the company's last three-year contract proposal.

Company officials say supervisors and technicians have kept the plant running, and that temps will be used starting next week.

The union says it is upset because the company wants to increase workers' pay using bonuses instead of hourly increases. The company is offering a $6,000 bonus this year and $5,000 bonuses each of the next two years while freezing hourly wages and cost of living adjustments over the life of the contract.
