Two of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the United States and India are teaming up to develop new anti-infective medications.

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) -- Two of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the United States and India are teaming up to develop new anti-infective medications.

Merck & Co. of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, and Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. of Gurgaon, India, announced Monday they have signed a product development deal.

The two drugmakers will work together to discover promising antibacterial and antifungal compounds.

Ranbaxy then will do lab testing and early phases of human testing and Merck will handle the more complex and expensive late-stage human testing for any promising experimental drugs.
