Zimmer Recalls Orthopedic Surgical Products

Company voluntarily recalled some orthopedic surgical products made at its Dover, Ohio, plant after determining they do not meet internal quality standards.

WARSAW, Ind. (AP) -- Zimmer Holdings Inc. said late Thursday it voluntarily recalled some orthopedic surgical products (OSP) made at its Dover, Ohio, facility after determining they do not meet the company's internal quality standards.

Also, the company said it voluntarily suspended production and sales of certain orthopedic surgical products made at the facility to focus on manufacturing improvements and employee quality training.

Zimmer said its actions are expected to reduce 2008 revenues by $70 million to $80 million. The recalls do not affect the company's core hip and knee implants business.

In 2007, Zimmer reported revenue from its OSP and other product category of $234 million, less than half of which came from products affected by the recalls and suspension.

The company said it notified the Food and Drug Administration, distributors and end-users of the recalls.
