Ball Corp. said Wednesday it will close an aluminum beverage can manufacturing plant in Kent, Wash., that employs 111 people.

BROOMFIELD, Colo. (AP) -- Ball Corp. said Wednesday it will close an aluminum beverage can manufacturing plant in Kent, Wash., that employs 111 people.

The plant is scheduled to close in the third quarter. Ball spokesman Scott McCarty said some employees could apply for other jobs or move to other facilities.

Plant equipment will be redeployed within Ball.

The Broomfield-based metal and plastic packaging supplier expects to record a pretax charge of about $12 million, or $7 million after-tax, in its second quarter results from the closure.

On final disposition of the facilities, the closure is expected to be about $4 million cash positive, inclusive of income tax benefits, the company said.

The 28-year-old Kent plant was one of Ball's smaller metal beverage can manufacturing facilities, with two production lines capable of producing about 1.1 billion, 12-ounce beverage cans per year.

Ball acquired the plant in 1998 from Reynolds Metals Co.

Ball and its subsidiaries employ more than 15,500 people worldwide.
