Qimonda Forms Partnership With Japanese Chip Maker

German memory chip maker has agreed to form a technology partnership with Elpida Memory Inc. for joint development of DRAM chips.

BERLIN (AP) -- Memory chip maker Qimonda AG said Thursday that it has agreed to form a technology partnership with Elpida Memory Inc. of Japan.

The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding on joint development of DRAM, or dynamic random access memory, chips, Qimonda said in a statement.

It added that the companies plan to introduce the so-called 4F2 cell that will result from their cooperation in 2010. They plan to exchange engineers.

The chip type is much smaller and allows for faster speeds to render graphics and make computer applications operate more quickly. They also sport low power consumption, meaning they can last longer in battery-operated devices.

''This technology alignment of two major DRAM innovators creates excellent opportunities for greater economies of scale in R&D and future joint manufacturing activities,'' Qimonda chief executive Kin Wan Loh said in a statement.

Shares of Qimonda American Depositary Receipts were up 11.8 percent on the announcement to euro2.45 (US$3.91) in Frankfurt trading.
