Poultry Plant Bringing 1,500 Jobs To North Carolina

Mississippi-based poultry company will build a new processing plant, feed mill and hatchery in Kinston, creating 1,500 new jobs.

KINSTON, N.C. (AP) -- A Mississippi-based poultry company says it will build a new processing plant, feed mill and hatchery in Kinston, creating 1,500 new jobs.

Sanderson Farms said Thursday it plans to invest more than $126 million in the operation. The facility will be able to process more than a million birds a week for the retail market.

Sanderson said the plant also would require 130 contract growers to supply birds.

The company said it plans to begin construction this summer and begin operations late next year.

The new plant would be good news for the town where Smithfield Packing Co. said in March it would close a smoked ham that employed 476 people.
