Make An In Vitro Chicken, Win $1 Million From PETA

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is offering a million-dollar prize to anyone who can create a commercially viable poultry product in a laboratory.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is offering a million-dollar prize to anyone who can create a commercially viable poultry product in a laboratory.

In an announcement on its Web site, the outspoken animal-rights organization says it is looking for ''in vitro chicken'' -- a lab-created version of poultry meat that uses animal stem cells placed in a medium and allowed to grow and reproduce.

The Norfolk-based group notes many scientists have researched ways to produce a product with the taste and texture of traditional chicken or other meats.

A prize will be awarded to the first people who create such a product in a large quantity and successfully sell it at a competitive price in at least 10 states before June 30, 2012.

Current chicken substitutes are typically soy-based.
