Kirin Considers Buying Australian Dairy Maker

Japanese beverage maker is preparing to purchase major Sydney-based dairy maker Dairy Farmers, sources familiar with the matter said Friday.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese beverage maker Kirin Holding Co. is preparing to purchase major Sydney-based dairy maker Dairy Farmers, sources familiar with the matter said Friday.

Kirin's Australian unit National Foods Ltd. has made inquiries with Australian authorities about whether such a buyout would contravene the country's antitrust laws, they said.

A Kirin official said nothing has been decided but added, ''It is true that we are interested in Dairy Farmers.''

Kirin Holdings, which owns major beer maker Kirin Brewery Co., has been strengthening overseas operations.

It bought the entire stock of National Foods, Australia's largest dairy products maker, in late 2007 from Philippine food company Miguel Corp. as a means to reinforce and bolster its non-beer business.
