Eye Care Company To Build Singapore Plant

Alcon says the plant is expected to help distribute eye care pharmaceutical products in Asia in a cheaper and faster manner.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Alcon Inc. said it plans to build a pharmaceutical plant in Singapore.

The Switzerland-based eye care company said late Sunday it expects to start work on the leased 20-acre site next year, with the 250,000 square foot facility fully operational in 2012. The plant is expected to help distribute eye care pharmaceutical products in Asia in a cheaper and faster manner, Alcon said.

The facility is expected to make more than 53 million units a year by the end of its third year.

Earlier this month Swiss drug developer Novartis AG said it plans to purchase Alcon in a two-part, $39 billion bid.
