Dutch Chemicals Maker Expanding U.S. Production

DSM NV will invest $450 million over three years to expand production capacity for a fiber used to strengthen body armor and military vehicle plating.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- The Dutch chemicals maker DSM NV says it will invest US$450 million (euro282 million) over three years to expand production capacity for a fiber that is used to strengthen body armor and military vehicle plating.

DSM spokesman Herman Betten says demand is strong in the United States, and the bulk of the investment will flow there. DSM opened a factory in Greenville, North Carolina, last year. The fiber, called Dyneema is billed as ''15 times stronger than steel.''

The fiber is also used in ropes, gloves and medical devices, Betten said Thursday.
