Air Filter Manufacturer Closes Iowa Plant

Clarcor Air Filtration Products closed immediately after telling employees of the decision late last week, leaving 43 people without a job.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) -- An air filter manufacturer has closed, leaving 43 people without a job.

Clarcor Air Filtration Products Inc., closed immediately after telling employees of the decision late last week, said Dave Lindsay, vice president and chief administrative officer for Clarcor.

Lindsay said a severance package is available to the displaced workers. Some have been offered jobs elsewhere, he said.

''It is so seldom we had to shut down facilities. This is new to us,'' Lindsay said. ''We are a very team-oriented company. We will provide severance for people, outplacement personnel, who will be there ... meeting one-on-one with employees.''

The plant was one of 20 the Tennessee-based company has across the country.

Lindsay said a review of the company's manufacturing and shipping patterns determined it wasn't feasible to keep the Davenport plant open.

''Our shipping patterns didn’t make sense,'' Lindsay said. ''The plants that remain need to make all of our products, because many of those plants are located closer to our customers.'' He also cited increased fuel costs as a reason for the closure.

About six workers will stay on until the end of May to fulfill existing orders, Lindsay said.
