Romanian Carmaker's Workers Stage Warning Strike

More than 4,000 employees at Renault's Romanian carmaker Dacia are threatening to strike, demanding higher wages and more benefits.

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — More than 4,000 employees at Renault's Romanian carmaker Dacia are striking to demand higher wages and more benefits.

Two-thirds of the employees working on the morning shift are taking part in a two-hour warning strike on Friday. They are threatening a general strike if their demands are not met.

Workers want a monthly salary increase of 550 lei (euro150; $230) for every worker, a share of the company's profit of between 5 and 10 percent, higher bonuses at Christmas and Easter, and a discount of 15 percent on Dacia cars or spare parts.

The management of French-owned Dacia Renault has yet to comment on the workers' demands.
