Ice Cream Cake Maker To Close Facility

Celebration Foods, maker of the iconic Carvel ice cream cakes, plans to close its Marlborough, Mass., plant in May, putting 90 people out of work.

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The maker of the iconic Carvel ice cream cakes Cookie Puss and Fudgie the Whale plans to close its Marlborough plant in May, putting 90 people out of work.

Celebration Foods Inc. informed employees Thursday that production is being moved to a facility in New Britain, Conn.

The company's president, Tim Shanley, told The MetroWest Daily News that it didn't make sense to have two plants so close. He said the move will save money.

The laid off workers will get severance based on years of service and union contract terms if they work until the plant's last day.

Carvel cakes are sold in about 570 franchised shops in 25 states and overseas as well as in supermarkets nationwide.

Celebration Foods is a division of Atlanta-based Focus Brands Inc.
