Chrysler Casting Plant Gets More Work

Automaker told employees at its Kokomo, Indiana, casting plant they will help make a new six-cylinder engine and parts for a Getrag transmission plant being built in Tipton.

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) -- Chrysler LLC told employees at its Kokomo casting plant they will help make a new six-cylinder engine and parts for a Getrag transmission plant being built in Tipton.

Chrysler spokesman Ed Saenz (SIGNS') says the company won't hire more workers to deal with the extra work, which will help preserve jobs at the factory. The Kokomo Casting Plant employs 760 people.

The plant will make an engine block for Chrysler's new Phoenix engine, and it will produce transmission cases and smaller parts for the Getrag plant.

Chrysler operates three transmission plants in Kokomo, besides the casting plant, and employs about 5,200 people there.
