Workers Clean Up Pipe Factory After Explosion

After a blast closed a Utah pipe factory, some of the 320 employees are still on the job, making repairs and cleaning up.

SPRINGVILLE, Utah (AP) — A pipe factory badly damaged by an explosion is closed, but some of the 320 employees are still on the job, making repairs and cleaning up.

Thirty to 40 people have been working on the cleanup since the explosion Sunday night at Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Co. in Springville, near Provo.

Manager John Balian hopes to call 20 more employees next week and more in March. Some employees will be paid for safety training.

Eleven people were injured when water mixed with calcium carbide, causing an explosion.

Tim Beardall was closest to the blast and suffered burns on his hands and face. He's improving at University of Utah Hospital.
