EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — A tentative contract between Magna International and the United Auto Workers will save approximately 2,700 jobs at the New Process Gear plant in suburban Syracuse.
Local union president Doug Havens tells the Syracuse Post-Standard that the deal is the best workers can expect. Although the contract contains wage cuts for some workers, it also includes a promise from Magna to invest in the plant and keep it operating. Havens says rejection of the contract would put the plant's future in jeopardy.
The plant supplies drivetrain parts to major automakers.
Union officials are planning an informational meeting on the new contract Sunday. Union members will vote on the pact next Wednesday and Thursday.
