Plan In Works To Save Closed Canadian Paper Mill

Montreal investor plans to resurrect the former Abitibi Mission mill in Thunder Bay, Ont., which closed last spring and put about 300 people out of work.

THUNDER BAY, Ont. — A Montreal investor plans to resurrect the former Abitibi Mission mill in Thunder Bay, Ont., which closed last spring and put about 300 people out of work.

Jay Gurandiano, president and chief executive officer of St. Laurent Paperboard Inc., proposes to invest a ''substantial amount of money.''

He told the Thunder Bay Chronicle-Journal the money would come from a group of investors.

Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union president Marvin Pupeza says Gurandiano will invest about $50 million into the facility, but Gurandiano did not confirm the figure.

Gurandiano says he plans to retool the plant to produce an eco-friendly lightweight containerboard product similar to cardboard.

He adds the mill will employ about 80 workers and create another 40 indirect jobs. However, he was vague on whether former Abitibi workers will be given hiring preference.
