Daewoo Shipbuilding Gets Oman Tanker Order

South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. received a $770 million order from Oman to build five oil tankers.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. said Tuesday said it has received a US$770 million (euro530 million) order from Oman to build five oil tankers.

The five very large crude carriers, or VLCCs, will be completed for state-owned Oman Shipping Co. by April 2012, Daewoo Shipbuilding said in a regulatory filing.

Daewoo Shipbuilding is the world's third-largest shipbuilder by order backlog. Its mainstay products include liquefied natural gas carriers, VLCCs and drilling rigs.

South Korean manufacturers dominate the global industry for ships. Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. is the world's largest shipbuilder.
