Bittersweet: Russell Stover Announces Layoffs

Candy maker blames the 150 layoffs on rising costs for raw materials and the company's need to reduce costs to remain competitive in the marketplace.

MONTROSE, Colo. (AP) — Some 150 employees of the Russell Stover Candies plant in Montrose will lose their jobs sometime around April 1st.

The Kansas City, Missouri-based candy maker has informed Montrose Mayor David White and factory workers that the 3 to 11 p.m. shift will be eliminated.

Russell Stover blamed the move on rising costs for raw materials, and the company's need to reduce costs to remain competitive in the marketplace.

The Montrose Economic Development Corporation and county officials recently said they would work together to provide incentives for Russell Stover to expand freezer storage space.

Company spokeswoman Robinn Weber says Russell Stover has no intention of closing the Montrose plant.

The facility has about 480 workers.
