November Manufacturing Technology Consumption Slips

At $365.66 million, U.S. technology consumption in November was down 9.3 percent from October, but up 5 percent from November 2006.

McLEAN, Va. — November U.S. manufacturing technology consumption reached $365.66 million, according to the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association (AMTDA) and the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT).
 
The total was down 9.3 percent from October, but up 5 percent from November 2006.  The year-to-date total of $3,851.40 million was up 6.6 percent over 2006.
 
By region, technology consumption in the Northeast totaled $55.03 million, down 17.2 percent from October and down 3.5 percent from November 2006. The year-to-date total was $592.32, up 11.4 percent over 2006.
 
In the South, consumption reached $45.06 million, up 12.3 percent from October and up 34.2 percent from November 2006. The $489.51 million year-to-date total was 8.8 percent higher than 2006.
 
The Midwest saw technology consumption reach $114.55 million, down 34 percent from October and down 1.2 percent from November 2006. The year-to-dates total of $1,265.35 million was up 9.1 percent from 2006.
 
At $90.36 million, technology consumption in the Central Region was up 3.3 percent from October, but down 8.2 percent from November 2006. The year-to-date total of $990.38 million was 5.9 percent higher than 2006.
 
Technology consumption in the West totaled $60.66 million, up 69.4 percent from October and up 39.8 percent from November 2006. At $513.83 million, the year-to-date total was down 4.2 percent from 2006.
 
“The November numbers continue to support the forecast of the five percent growth range for the year,” said Peter Borden, AMTDA President. “Orders for large multi-process machines are strong, despite longer lead times, displaying long-term confidence across several segments of the manufacturing economy.”
