CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Firetruck maker American LaFrance says some the 100 workers put on a 30-day furlough last month will be permanently laid off and the rest won't be called back until March.
Company spokesman Michael Gordon said Friday that he didn't know how many workers would be affected.
The furloughs were done to give the company time to update inventory after moving last year from Charleston County to a new $62 million plant in Berkeley County.
Gordon says the delay for the workers' return is a function of the company not having the parts and components available for assembly. Initially, workers were scheduled to come back Monday.
The company had a total of 500 workers before the furlough. The company said furloughed employees would continue to get medical benefits and would be eligible for unemployment benefits.
