American Woodmark Announces Layoffs

Sluggish home construction market is being blamed for layoffs at kitchen cabinetmaker.

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — The sluggish home construction market is being blamed for layoffs at kitchen cabinetmaker American Woodmark Corp.

The company announced Thursday it was laying off 32 people at its facility at Allegheny County's Barton Business Park. The number represents about 15 percent of the company's local work force.

In an e-mail to The Cumberland Times-News, American Woodmark executive Bryan Earl said the Allegheny County location was not the only location to face layoffs. He said the company expects some strength will return to the market in the spring and summer.

The company is based in Winchester, Va., and has 15 locations.
