NEW YORK (AP) — Medical device maker St. Jude Medical Inc. said late Wednesday it is adding up to 1,200 new employees in Puerto Rico over the next three years to work at a recently purchased plant.
The facility, located in Arecibo's Santana Industrial Park, will initially produce cardiac rhythm management devices such as pacemakers and pacing leads. The devices are currently produced at the company's Caguas plant. Implantable cardioverter defibrillators and their corresponding high voltage leads are expected to be manufactured at the Arecibo facility in the future.
St. Jude's Caguas facility will continue to make mechanical heart valves and Angio-Seal vascular closure devices. It is expected to add new product lines later.
The Arecibo plant is expected to start operating by the middle of next year.
