Mentor Buys French Medical Device Company

$56.5 million deal will expand Mentor's presence in the surgical aesthetics field.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Medical products maker Mentor Corp. said Thursday it has bought French medical device company Perouse Plastie SAS for 42 million euros, or $56.5 million.

The deal includes the assumption of about 3 million euros ($4 million) of debt. The transaction is expected to close in July.

Perouse manufactures and sells silicone gel breast implants for several international markets. Its primary manufacturing facility is in France.

''This acquisition will increase our leadership in several international markets and represents our commitment to expanding our market presence in the surgical aesthetics field,'' said Mentor President and Chief Executive Joshua H. Levine.

Mentor will update its financial guidance for fiscal year 2008 to reflect the acquisition when it releases its first-quarter earnings. The company doesn't expect the deal will materially add to or reduce yearly earnings.

Shares of Mentor gained 12 cents to $41.14 in morning trading.
