India Projected To Be Major Semiconductor Manufacturing Location

India's growing middle class is driving the demand for electronics, according to In-Stat research.

India is poised to become a major semiconductor manufacturing destination, due to its growing semiconductor use, the growth of electronics manufacturing and the setting up of EMS shops, according to a report from In-Stat, a high-tech market research firm.

In-Stat's research, “Indian Semiconductor Market Update: Consumption Manufacturing and Future Development,” attributes the fast growing semiconductor market in India to the a rising middle class that is consuming electronics at a significant pace.

“The semiconductor ecosystem, which is currently dominated by design services and embedded software, will be in place by 2010 with the setting up of planned semiconductor manufacturing facilities,” says Mayank Jain, In-Stat analyst. “Thus, by 2010, India will have the entire semiconductor industry in place, and will be in the reckoning among other Asian semiconductor manufacturing countries.”

The semiconductor market in India was at $1.18 billion in 2005 and is projected to reach $3.09 billion by 2010, according to In-Stat's research.

In the consumer sector, television sets are the biggest semiconductor users. And by 2010, communications is anticipated to be the major contributor to semiconductor consumption.
