Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski has directed the Department of Environmental Conservation to (DEC) assemble an Arctic Pipeline Technology Team and called for a corrosion conference to improve pipeline integrity. The Governor announced the directive after visiting to the North Slope last week to view cleanup at BP’s GC-2 spill site. The Arctic Pipeline Technology Team will be created by a Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Environmental Conservation, the Department of Natural Resources, the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and the Federal Office of Pipeline Safety. The team will share information on preserving pipeline integrity in arctic and sub-arctic climates, as well as troubleshooting design, construction, operation and maintenance problems as a way to confirm the correct technology is applied to the North Slope pipeline system. The Governor also directed the DEC to schedule a conference in Alaska on pipeline integrity. The purpose of the conference will be to gather information on pipeline integrity technology and how to apply the appropriate technologies to Alaska’s pipeline system.
