Soik developed SHADOW after taking a much needed break from his busy life, sleeping for 26 hours straight. “In that sleep I started to dream again,” he says. To remember these dreams he required a tool unlike anything that existed in the market place.

“We sleep for a third of our lives, and we forget 95% of our dreams within five minutes of waking up. But some really pivotal things—laws of physics, technological advancements, classic works of literature—were born of dreams,” explains Soik. He began contacting leading professionals in various fields and presenting them with his idea, and everyone he approached to join the project immediately came on board. The current team includes six PhDs and advisors from companies all over the world.

The app works by setting a series of escalated alarms over a period of five to 30 minutes, in contrast to traditional alarm clocks that quickly disrupt the state between sleeping and waking. “When you turn the alarm off, a microphone opens up and you can speak or type your dream into the application. If you speak into your phone, the app will transcribe it into text and pull out the key words for the data cloud,” explains Soik. The data cloud created by app users will help to “anonymously organize global data into major themes and trends.”
