A report released yesterday by the Center for American Progress says hundreds of chemical plants in 47 states have replaced hazardous chemicals with safer alternatives, making the facilities less appealing targets for terrorists. The report is called "Preventing Toxic Terrorism: How Some Chemical Facilities Are Removing Danger to American Communities." The Center for American Progress is a non-partisan research and educational organization.
The Web site National Environmental Trust, however, says about 14,000 other facilities continue to use highly hazardous chemicals that if released into the environment could injure or kill nearby residents. National Environmental Trust is a non-profit, non-partisan organization established to inform citizens about environmental problems.
