In 2005, 15 countries significantly expanded their geothermal power production, according to the Geothermal Energy Association. The Washington, D.C.-based trade group said the expansion proved that the outlook for growth in this use of the earth's natural heat for energy was surging. It said that while the U.S. leads the world in geothermal output with more than 2,800 MW of power produced, its prominence was challenged in 2005 by projects in the Philippines, which produces nearly 20% of its electricity from geothermal sources, and Indonesia, which plans to boost its geothermal output from 800 MW to more than 2,000 by 2009.
Other countries with significant geothermal projects include Canada, Germany, Iceland and India. In the U.S., new projects were identified this year in 10 Western states and Hawaii that could triple the amount of geothermal energy the nation produces by 2010.
