To improve food safety, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) and NSF International announce an educational conference that will take place on September 27-29, 2006 in Denver, Colorado.

Foodborne illness is a serious, ongoing public health issue. To improve food safety, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) and NSF International announce an educational conference that will take place on September 27-29, 2006 in Denver, Colorado

The conference entitled, Reaching At Risk Audiences and Today’s Other Food Safety Challenges will provide educators and communicators, medical and public health professionals, and foodservice and food companies with the latest information, research and insights for reducing foodborne illness in general and at-risk populations.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 76 million foodborne illnesses occur in the United States, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths each year.

The conference will encourage behavior modifications during food preparation and consumption to help reduce exposure to pathogens known to cause foodborne illness. Presentations will focus on:

  • surveillance and epidemiological insights about foodborne illness;
  • food safety behavioral and attitudinal research;
  • social marketing, educational interventions, and program research;
  • the role of foodservice and food industries; and
  • new technologies.

Information will be provided in plenary sessions, panel discussions, poster presentations, educational and commercial exhibits, and pre- and post-conference workshops.

The conference is expected to attract approximately 600 participants including trade, consumer and health associations as well food safety, public health, medical and cooperative extension professionals.
