Boeing Defense Unit Plans To Cut 1,000 Jobs

SEATTLE (AP) -- The head of Boeing Co.'s Integrated Defense Systems has told employees that the defense division will have to cut about 1,000 jobs because of Pentagon budget reductions.

In an internal memo Monday, Boeing's Jim Albaugh says the job reductions are needed to keep the company competitive.

Boeing hasn't said what its timeline is for the cuts, and no decision has been made on how many of the cuts will affect the Puget Sound region, which has 7,000 workers in Boeing's defense systems operation.

In January, CEO Jim McNerney said the company would cut 10,000 jobs companywide this year through attrition and layoffs. Boeing spokesman Dan Beck wouldn't say Tuesday whether the 1,000 cuts are part of the 10,000.

Look out National Defense here it comes  7/15/2009 11:27:00 AM
This has all the feel of BO trickle down economics. The best part of National Defense is trickling down. Instead of spending money on protecting our country BO wants to spend money on the govenment saving us from ourselves with no thought to the future of the country. Now if these were UNION jobs being lost, BO would be tripping over his shoe laces to make sure that there is no one harmed. Fire McNerney for getting rid of those jobs unless it's Engineers he's a cuttin! Then give him a hefty bonus to keep him on. At last the boat is running out of buckets for bailouts.
CUT JOBS !!  7/15/2009 11:38:00 AM
CUT MORE JOBS..Do not worry, ODUMBO will provide you with a TAX CREDIT so you can go retrain at local College and get a new degree and try and get a job at fast food joint, but you may be over qualified, so do downplay your resume, just to make sure you get a shot..

Looks as if Socialism is going to win this round. Is there another Ronald Reagan around to take over when these buffons leave? Let's hope so. A strong National Defense keeps the bad guys away. No defense leaves the door open to every tiny dictator and thug group to have their way with us. Giving them a big hug and singing cum-by-yah won't help. And paying for other programs with defense dollars won't help if there is nothing left to serve. I hope these are union jobs so BO flys to the resuce and saves them. Maybe it makes sense while this administration is in place to have the unions run everything. Maybe we'll be safer.
Cost of Staying Competitive  7/15/2009 12:33:00 PM
Defense funding has always been a political football. Change in defense strategy has always been a Presidential Administration perogative. Is anyone really surprised by Defense Cuts?? I am glad Boeing is being proactive instead of just riding the Defense Gravy Train as if it were an entitlement.
More jobs losses from Obamanomic.  7/15/2009 2:47:00 PM
Did Obama fail all of his history classes. You might think so, but really, driving the country fully into depression is part of the Obama plan. That way, he can rebuild the country as he (and George Soros) see fit - a fully Statist/Marxist nation. I kid you not - that IS the plan.
I don't know why...  7/15/2009 2:50:00 PM
someone would favor getting rid of engineers instead of unskilled/skilled labor or any jobs for that matter. Just because they may be union jobs doesn't make them more worthwhile than non-union. Families and communities are still affected either way. I'm an engineer living a middle class lifestyle. I'm living no better than the contractor across the street or the teacher next door. I get annoyed with the union BS attitude of their job is needed more than mine. Without engineers, there is no product to assemble. Seems like a backlash against those of us with a post high school education.
All BO is doing is what McCain also wanted  7/15/2009 4:02:00 PM
Let's face it, both wanted to cut Defense
Hello? Is there anybody out there . . .   7/15/2009 4:05:00 PM
who didn't see this comming with the election of a socialist President and an idotic congress?
Boeing-job cuts  7/15/2009 4:20:00 PM
The theme that cuts through most of these comments is one of total polarization. It is so easy to 'place' blame in an irresponsible manner. I feel that our military must have a say in weapons and systems. I view these comments by Boeing as directed to the reps in DC to continue producing not needed systems and link it to a save jobs theme. Why not spend those funds on developing newer technologies for defense? We must begin to spend intelligently. The tax payer foots the bill either way. I would prefer to think and hope that the money is being spent wisely on weapon systems our military feels they need. Who is better qualified to define that need?
I Don't Know Why...Either!  7/15/2009 10:02:00 PM
I have no real concept as to how the Union member mind operates these days, but I do recall reading of a strike of Engineers at Boeing shortly after the laborers settled. I don't know about you, but I have always felt that my knowledge and skills are able to stand on their own merit, and have seldom let myself down in this respect. I don't believe I could work for a company where the Engineers felt the need for a union to represent them. I think part of what we see here is the union leaders seeing that they have in general pushed the companies much too far in the good years, and are now trying to save their own jobs and those of the membership. With the current administration, they probably have a better than even chance of success for a while. Pretty soon, however the companies will again collapse unless they are able to wrest realistic concessions from labor. Organized Labor has immense political clout due to the broad membership controlling litwerally millions of votes, and likewise making millions of dollars in political campaign contributions. That is why I believe the present administration is so blatently supporting the unions, as they supported Obama. I voted for him too, but his extreme leftist policy turned out to be a real eye opener! NEVER again! Nextb time around, I'll vote for the other guys!
Future Combat Systems  7/16/2009 12:11:00 AM
Face it people there is more to it than your bitching about Obama. After all it's Bush's man Gates who is requesting all these cut backs. And as someone who works for one of the subcontractors who is affected, I agree. All of these contracts are blotted and at the top end, mismanaged so yes, it's not OB that's cutting jobs its Boeing's over inflated contracts and typical management telling people not to work to hard. you have heard about the $400 hammer... At least he's not starting a war just to get his name in the history books...

"it's not OB that's cutting jobs its Boeing's over inflated contracts and typical management telling people not to work to hard. you have heard about the $400 hammer... At least he's not starting a war just to get his name in the history books... " Who is OB? Is that OP's cousin? And you must be talking about Lyndon Johnson starting the Vietnam war . . . The only other war I seem to remember us involved in was in response to us being attacked and 3,000 US citizens being killed on 9/11/01.
Future Combat Systems  7/16/2009 8:03:00 PM
Sorry B O, but see there goes the Right again with the forgetfulness and miscommunication. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 as Bush lead us to believe, Afghanistan did. So who is actually building up troops in Afghanistan where the terrorists live, Obama. Daddy was justified in 1991 to go after Iraq, and Jr. in 2002 for Afghanistan, but he sent a few thousand in and called it a day, he then proceeded to move “extras” out to support his war. Now back to the real issue, it’s still Gates that called for the stoppage, not because he doesn’t support outfitting our troops with the best stuff out there, that was Rumsfeld’s roll, but because he wants to get the best price, best product, and in a timely manner, something Boeing hasn’t been able to do. Besides McCain was prepared to cut back even more, he’s the one stopping the extra F22s… So let’s keep the facts straight. Oh and as for Vietnam, Nixon went head over heals for a CONFLICT and then tied the troups hand so they couldn't win.
