Samsonite Retail Unit Files For Bankruptcy Protection

MANSFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Samsonite Company Stores LLC, the U.S. retail unit of the luggage maker, on Wednesday filed for Chapter 11 protection with a prepackaged reorganization plan that includes store closures.

The company said there would be a "significant" reduction in the number of mall-based and other stores as it concentrates its efforts on its more profitable outlet stores. It did not specify how many of its 173 U.S. stores would shut down.

The Mansfield, Mass.-based retailer said in a statement that creditors would receive 100 percent of their claims and that it expected to emerge from court protection within 45 days to 90 days.

Parent company Samsonite Corp. is undergoing its own restructuring, out of court, to cut costs.

"Realigning the company's real estate portfolio will increase profitability, allowing us to further capitalize on growth opportunities and to secure the company's future," said Kyle Gendreau, chief financial officer of the retail unit.

The company said day-to-day operations would continue as is. It plans to seek court approval to continue to honor gift cards, warranties and other customer programs.

Its bankruptcy case was filed in Delaware.

Company ran itself into trouble  9/2/2009 11:09:00 PM
I was a store manager of one of the stores that is shutting down. The company ran itself into the ground by opening their Black label Lines. They invested millions into luggage that they should have never even thought of selling. When they try to sell a piece of luggage for over $600.00 in this economy, let face it, it is not going to happen. The funny thing is they spent all of their money on their black label stores and would not invest any money in their outlet stores. Now all of a sudden they are bankrupt. Go figure. For the last several months my store has not had hardly any luggage in it, now all of a sudden, I have several shipments of luggage coming in. if I they would have stocked their stores properly months prior to now I guarantee we would still have our jobs. The leaders of Samsonite have managed to run this company into the ground and now its employees, let now say former employees have to suffer. God forbid the people who ruined the company lose their jobs. Welcome to corporate America. Feed the rich and starve the poor.
