GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) -- The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant in Gadsden has shut down for a week.

Goodyear officials said Monday they temporarily closed the plant because of a shortage of raw materials used in producing tires and to reduce the company's tire production.

Plant spokeswoman Jackie Edmondson said the shutdown began at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The plant will resume production at 1 a.m. Sunday.

Edmondson said the shortage affected almost all the Goodyear tire plants in North America when some facilities damaged by Hurricane Ike were not able to provide raw materials.

About 1,400 employees at the plant are affected.
