Ford Cuts 900 Jobs At Mustang Plant

DETROIT (AP) -- Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday that it plans to cut 900 workers at the Michigan plant that makes the Mustang, after slow sales last year due to the tough economy and competition from the new Chevrolet Camaro.

Ford will reduce shifts from two to one in July at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The plant, which is jointly owned with Mazda Motor Corp., also makes the Mazda6 midsize sedan.

The plant employs nearly 2,300 people. Most of the layoffs will be hourly manufacturing workers, but some salaried staff also will be cut, Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans said.

Evans said there was significant down time at the plant last year and Ford can get the volume it needs from one shift. Mustang sales fell 27 percent last year, in part because of competition from the Camaro, which went on sale in the spring and came within 5,000 cars of outselling the Mustang. The Camaro hasn't outsold the Mustang since 1985. Mazda6 sales were down 34 percent.

Evans says a majority of the workers will be offered positions at other plants. Ford said last month it will hire 1,200 workers at its Chicago Assembly Plant to build the new Ford Explorer. Explorer production will start at the end of this year. Ford also recently announced a plan to create 1,000 jobs in Michigan to make electric car batteries. Evans said the company also needs workers at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich., which is scheduled to begin producing the new Ford Focus later this year.

Ford currently has around 600 workers on indefinite layoff nationwide. Those workers and the ones to be laid off at Flat Rock will have the first opportunity to take jobs at facilities that are hiring. The company has been trying to thin the ranks of hourly workers, most recently offering buyout packages to all 41,000 U.S. hourly workers in December. Around 1,000 workers took similar buyout offers last year.

How many thousands of jobs did Obama...  2/16/2010 4:09:00 PM
..say that were being added? Yeah, a rhetorcial question - the reality is that Obama has the sign of the number wrong.
Answer 5.0  2/16/2010 4:22:00 PM
Just at Ford in Dearborn today. Stood next to a idling Mustang 5.0...Sounded AWESOME. Based on the published numbers I have seen should also significantly increase the vehicle's overall performance as well. I think there are some people just waiting for its arrival and sales will bounce back up again. Camaro enjoy your close approach on an introduction year as the Mustang will completely dominate this segment again...
Ford Mustang Plant  2/16/2010 4:24:00 PM
If Ford would fix the back end styling of the Mustang, I would buy one and so would many others. As it is, the rounded back end looks horible. Make it look like a Mustang and then people would buy.
900 workers lose jobs at Mustang Plant  2/16/2010 4:26:00 PM
As a member of the Mustang Nation I am sad to see this news, but I've got to tell ya, that Camaro really out shines the Mustang, especially in the six cylinder category. Add OnStar and the Camaro is a much better buy. Too bad, Ford, you could have controlled the personal sports car world, but you blew it.
Ford Sales Down Due to Government Motors Competition  2/16/2010 4:27:00 PM
While the Government is busy pledging the creation of more jobs, it interferes with the private sector which directly results in loss the of jobs for others in the private sector. How does that work Mr. Obama? Government bailouts, which may have worked for some folks over at GM, have poised the Government as a major stakeholder in the auto industry. This is a blatant conflict of interests as Government Motors is a Ford competitor. In essence, the Government is putting cars out there for sale, competing with other auto makers and putting people out on the streets - the very people that payed taxes to their Government, basically their competitors. Get ready for it folks, the Peoples Republic of Obamaland is manifest.
Obama's jobs???  2/16/2010 4:57:00 PM
The USA needs productive jobs producing SOMETHING. Not more government Jobs. The USA is already lopsided Average worker =$40k, Government worker =$70K. This is dumb!
Ford has some stupid people  2/16/2010 5:55:00 PM
The back end of a mustang, do not screw with what works. Its like the VW T-bird tail lights, they are thinking of the wrong TAIL light. Will wait for the 2012 for my 4th mustang. 68,07 cobra,07 C/S. Hope the 12 Jet Mustang looks like a Mustang. All comes down to a little tail, light.
Should read Ford adds Jobs  2/17/2010 6:56:00 AM
Do the math, +1200 Explorer jobs + 1000 battery jobs -900 Mustang jobs = +1300 total jobs. If GM is selling more cars then even more people are working and we'll get some of the bail out moneny back. Quit your doom and gloom BS.
Muscle Cars  2/17/2010 7:12:00 AM
Leave it to the "big 3" to bring muscle cars back after a 30 yr absence to a retiring fan base, no owner loyalty, and high gas prices. 30 yrs ago every pimply teen had one of these...sorry....that party is over.
Camaro  2/17/2010 8:13:00 AM
By the way, the Camaro was designed in Australia and is built in Canada. It is hardly an "American" muscle car anyway.
RE: Muscle Cars  2/17/2010 10:28:00 AM
Shut up Oboma!!! No one agrees with your marketing skills.
Camaro  2/17/2010 2:09:00 PM
since it is built in Canada it is an "American" car. Last I checked, Canada was on the North American continent. Is it built in the US, no, but its still American. Check a map.
Should Read Competition from the new Chevrolet Camaro  2/17/2010 2:58:00 PM
Do the math, GM is 60 percent owned by the Government! This not only bespeaks of government meddling, it is an unethical conflict of interests. Sure jobs are lost and gained in the PRIVATE business world, but the last thing I want my tax dollars to do is contribute to a competitive business. Try selling that bailout to the folks in Flat Rock that now have to move their families to Chicago.
Mustang layoffs  2/26/2010 1:28:00 AM
I would like to remind the user blaming Obama for this that Ford elected to NOT accept government support, so keep the political Bravo Sierra out of it!!
Look who made a wrong turn!  4/2/2010 7:21:00 PM
This is an automotive board, yet we have some faux news junkies that HAVE to politicize everything. This NOT A POLITICAL FORUM! On another subject, I am intrigued by the 2011 Mustang. 304 hp out of a V6! That's amazing! And now they have wrung 400 hp out of the V8? that's impressive!
