BOSTON (AP) -- Federal environmental regulators say a paint and stain manufacturer in Newburyport has paid a $266,800 penalty for selling products containing chemicals that had not been properly registered.
Valspar Corp. makes paints and stains sold under the Samuel Cabot name.
The Environmental Protection Agency says the company distributed two products from March 2006 to February 2007 that claimed to kill or remove mold and mildew.
However, neither product had received a pesticide registration from the EPA as required by federal law.
The EPA also alleged that Valspar hampered the public's right to accurate information about toxic chemicals.
Mike Dougherty, a spokesman for Minneapolis-based Valspar, called the incidents ''unintentional mistakes'' and said the company is currently in full compliance.
